Does technological innovation exist in Ecuador? Three examples from one of the most innovative businesses in the world

Innovation is an indispensable opportunity for businesses that are looking to make themselves known in a continuously complex field. This was confirmed by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG)’s recent investigation of the most innovative businesses of 2023, which explores the innovation trends in the leading global companies.

Among the most innovative, tech companies maintain the lead, with six of them in the top ten of the list: Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, Samsung, Hawei and Siemens. The American domination of the list slowed, giving way to new regions such as Asia and Europe, through Korean Samsung, Chinese Huawei, and German Siemens.

However, how is innovation viewed outside the geographical sphere? In a market like the Ecuadorian one, still distant from the intense centres of technological innovation, how does global technological innovation pass from being an idea to a reality?

How does global technological innovation apply in Ecuador?

In Ecuador, one of the world’s most innovative businesses has been around since 2002. Huawei promotes a more intelligent and connected world. Its sustained commitment to innovation lies in research and development, allocating 25.1% of its annual revenues to these areas and allocating 53.4% of its total global employees to R&D, a decisive factor in its global leadership.

Huawei exemplifies its innovative capabilities not only on a global scale but also locally. This work demonstrates its innovation in the telecommunications infrastructure sector, where it stands out not only for its leadership in Ecuador, but also for its implementation of solutions that go beyond its principle focus of business, towards themes such as digital disparity, education and environmental conservation. For this we present three examples of technological innovation in Ecuador.

6th generation wifi: high-range connectivity

The new standard of wireless connection is wifi technology. Its difference from previous versions is in its improvement of speed and stability of connection while supporting multiple connected devices. Furthermore, its energy consumption is down 30% compared with 4th and 5th generation wifi. This new type of connection quadruples the bandwidth of the server, allowing users to have a better connectivity experience without interference. The characteristic intelligent antenna of the wifi 6 design creates networks without gaps in coverage, offering a service without wait times, and also amplifying access to new geographical areas which were previously outside the network.

IdeaHubs: enhance the classroom experience

IdeaHub is a collaborative tool for education. It is a smart display that houses a comprehensive pedagogical solution. This multifunctional tool processes graphs, maps and diagrams in real time. Furthermore, it allows for the integration of necessary content for a class such as; documents, photos, videos, and links, maintaining optimum quality that promotes digitalisation in educational institutions, transforming the classroom into an intelligent space that improves the learning process through technological innovation.

Artificial Intelligence: a monitor of fragile and threatened ecosystems

The Cloud system with Artificial Intelligence and Big Data is used for the monitoring of species as a tool for conservation of the environment of fragile ecosystems. It operates through sound sensors, powered by energy from solar panels, to capture the noises of the jungle and transmit them in real time to the cloud. These sensors detect abnormal data from the flora and fauna, transmitting alerts so that the reserve rangers can react in time. This system improves remote tracking abilities without human intervention. Through the “Guardians of the Forest” programme, Huawei contributes to the monitoring of 600 hectares of forest north of Manabí, of the Jama-Coaque reserve. So far they have monitored 28 species of wild fauna, extending the capacity to detect threats in a greater geographical area thanks to technological innovation.
