The Impact of Measuring Our Footprint

The carbon footprint is a measurement used to assess the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) released into the atmosphere as a result of human activities or a specific product, service, or event. GHGs contribute to global warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere and increasing Earth’s temperature.

Measuring the carbon footprint is particularly important in the fight against climate change as it helps identify areas where emissions can be reduced and actions can be taken to mitigate environmental impact. Companies and governments often conduct assessments of their carbon footprint as part of their efforts to reduce emissions and adopt more sustainable practices. There are also certifications and standards related to carbon footprint that can be used to demonstrate an entity’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

In Ecuador, companies can voluntarily apply ISO 14064 standards to manage their GHG emissions. ISO 14064 is a series of international standards developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that focus on the management and quantification of GHGs. Adopting this guidance ensures transparent communication about the environmental impact generated by the private sector.

On August 28th, Banco ProCredit received the Carbon Footprint Quantification distinction from the Ministry of Environment, demonstrating its alignment with ISO 14064 standards. “In addition to adapting our operations to mitigate the carbon footprint, we have prepared a report with an emissions inventory that was reviewed by an external auditor, certifying the procedures and supporting documentation for the total calculation”, explains Karen Angulo, Energy Specialist at Banco ProCredit.

In this way, Banco ProCredit continues to make an impact and work towards combating climate change. Its operations are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, with strategies focused on emission reduction and neutrality, aiming to become a Carbon Zero entity.
